Muddy Pond

for Southern Foodways Alliance

The Southern Foodways Alliance (SFA) documents, studies, and explores the diverse food cultures of the changing American South.

After decades of making sweet sorghum syrup, Mark Guenther still eats it every day. On biscuits. On pork. On a tomato sandwich covered in peanut butter and mayonnaise. From cultivation to harvest, this 10-minute film profiles a second-generation sorghum farmer in eastern Tennessee. But Mark Guenther is more than that--he's an ambassador for a comeback crop.

Muddy Pond Sorghum is celebrated throughout the South and served at some of the country’s top restaurants. This film was commissioned for the Taste of the South at Blackberry Farm and won the Ground Zero Tennessee First Shorts award at the Nashville Film Festival.
